How Insulin Injections Work
If you plan to start insulin therapy, you need to understand how insulin injections work.
Many people with diabetes take insulin with a syringe. Before using a syringe for insulin delivery, take a moment to ensure you have everything you need.
Along with your insulin vials, you should have the following insulin injection supplies on hand:
- Syringes and needles
- Bandages
- Gauze
- Alcohol pads
- A sharps container
After you collect these supplies, select an injection site and wash your hands. You can read more on how to use insulin syringes in our blog on Insulin & Delivery Types.
However, there are several ways to inject insulin. Whether you prefer a syringe, an insulin pen or an insulin pump, ADS has a variety of insulin products to suit your needs.
Insulin Vial Shelf Life
Whether you use Humalog Insulin Lispro or another type of insulin, this medication has a limited shelf life.
Because of that, you need to check insulin vials’ expiration dates before using them. These dates indicate how long an unopened vial will last if stored correctly.
Once you puncture a vial of Humalog Insulin Lispro, you should use it within 28 days. You can safely store open vials of this insulin in the fridge or at room temperature.
Other types of rapid-acting insulin (such as Novolog and Apidra) follow the same recommendations for use-by dates and open vial storage. Different guidelines apply to other insulin varieties, such as:
- Humulin R: Use within 31 days of opening; store at room temperature or in the fridge
- Novolin N: Use within 42 days of opening; store at room temperature
- Lantus: Use within 28 days of opening; store at room temperature or in the fridge
- Insulin degludec: Use within 56 days of opening; store at room temperature or in the fridge
