Smart Insulin Pens

A smart insulin pen is a reusable self-injection pen that communicates with a Smartphone app that can help individuals with diabetes improve their blood sugar management.

Benefits include:

• Dosing Accuracy—Smart insulin pens can help calculate insulin doses in real time, including for meals or to correct high blood sugar levels. Some pens can also deliver accurate half-unit doses. They also provide alerts to help prevent missed doses.
• Improved Tracking—Smart insulin pens automatically record the date and amount of insulin injections. They also track how much insulin is onboard to avoid stacking insulin when correcting high blood sugar.
• App Connectivity—Certain smart insulin pens connect to an app on your smartphone and provide data from blood glucose meters, and can be integrated with continuous glucose monitors (CGMs).

Using a smart insulin pen with a continuous glucose monitor can help prevent skipped or missed doses.  For example, a study in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology showed Type 1 diabetes patients using a smart insulin pen with a CGM can help improve adherence to insulin therapy.

 Participants had a 43% reduction in missed bolus doses at follow-up after 180 days.
